Mudbiking

December 24, 2005. Mountain Biking Mt. Diablo.

It's rained a LOT in the past few weeks and I decided it was time to test out the new tires in the mud. How muddy was it? Well, this is a picture I took at the end of the ride...
(remember to click on the pictures to enlarge them)

Pretty muddy but not sloppy. Fine for riding. And riding is what I did..

This is where the fire trail turns into singletrack. Bikes aren't allowed on the singletrack. What were the odds of a ranger being out on a wet Saturday morning in December? I figured low. The trees and rocks are totally covered with a vibrant, thick green moss. It's very pretty.

This is the singletrack. Gosh, is that a bike?

More singletrack. The conditions here were more slick than muddy. The trail was still firm pack dirt but the wet leaves that concealed rocks were a bit tricky. There were a LOT of large rocks that had rolled off the hillside during the rains and into the trail. Some of the rocks were bowling ball + size.

Always a choice...to the left or the right? Both are singletrack and both are not open for cyclists.

This is out of order, as it is part of the ascent on the fire trail

Same spot as the previous picture, only from the front. Look closely at the top of the front tire. Click for a larger image. Whatever you do, notice how much mud and plant material is stuck on the tire.

This is about as far as I went on the singletrack and I rode up the creekbed a bit to get all the mud off of my tires. That worked great, until I got back on the trail. The mud magically reappeared. Clicking on the picture allows you to see the detail of the moss on the trees, if you care for that kind of thing.
